David Halpern

Obituary of David Halpern

David Bruce Halpern was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 10, 1950 to Florence and Phillip Halpern. He grew up on E. 3rd near Avenue P, with his parents and his best friend, his brother Steve. Dave attended Public School 177, Intermediate School P.S. 228, Lincoln H.S. and CCNY before a move to California to attend CSU Fresno. Dave said hello one day to a disarmingly beautiful, sweet and gentle young woman, Vicki, who became his wonderful partner of 45 years.

In retirement, Dave and Vicki moved to Santa Barbara, CA in 2014. Dave died on September 9, 2020, leaving behind truly beloved family members and a host of treasured friends.

Dave and Vicki's children, Alex Halpern of Petaluma, CA and Dara Goldyne of Santa Barbara, along with Dara's husband Avi, are among their crowning achievements and blessings. Blessings, twice over, arrived with the births of grandson Milo (6) and granddaughter Georgia (3).  Dave is also survived by his dear, loving mom, Florence, his beloved brother, Steve, sister-in-law Connie and nieces and nephew, Hannah, Rachel and Zach. He was predeceased by his dad, Phillip.

He relished his years as a school psychologist, principal and program manager with the Fresno County Office of Education. Dave worked with many inspiring educators, serving emotionally disabled and cognitively delayed students. He served for a number of years on the board of directors of Temple Beth Israel in Fresno and as Temple president. Dave volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), supporting foster children in need.

His approach to living was to focus on kindness and generosity, a desire for equality and respect for all, and an effort to live in the moment, appreciating life’s many joys.
