Obituary of Catherine L. Nicholson

Catherine L "Cathy" Nicholson passed away suddenly on August 28, 2012. She was born February 5, 1949 in Los Angeles to Maurice and Doris Harnish. Cathy was from the beginning an inquisitive "caretaker." She always knew she wanted to be a nurse, and truly enjoyed her profession for over 30 years. She earned advanced certification in critical care and touched the lives of countless patients. She also saved a few lives outside the hospital setting through prompt and professional action. Growing up, Cathy loved competitive swimming and being a lifeguard. As an adult, she was a role model for constructively managing health challenges. She was a 20+ year survivor of leukemia, and managed arthritis and its complications for 30 years, but always with a positive attitude and the mantra "let's do what we have to do and get on with life." That approach was a wonderful gift to her family and friends. In the ten years since her retirement from nursing, Cathy indulged her passions for gardening, sewing, and quilting, enjoyed long cross-country RV trips with her husband and their cats, and particularly appreciated meeting so many people who shared her interests. Cathy is survived by her husband, Stan Nicholson, her daughter, Erin Scholl of Oakland, her mother, Doris Taylor of Santa Barbara, her brother, Jack Harnish of Woodland Hills, two granddaughters, Ashley and Alissa Nicholson of Marietta, Georgia, and numerous nephews and nieces and their families throughout Southern California. A celebration of Cathy's life will be arranged and announced in coming weeks.
