Obituary of Wayne W. Ballinger

Wayne W. Ballinger passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, November 26th. He was 81. Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joanne. He is survived by his five children, Stephen, Michael, Timothy, Cynthia and Catherine; as well as his younger brother David. He was devoted to and adored by his 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Wayne was born in Chicago, IL on July 1st, 1930. His family later moved to southern California where he attended Pasadena City College, University of La Verne and Occidental College. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Upon returning to Southern California, he began working in the construction industry as a lather/plasterer. Wayne met his future wife, Joanne Wilson, at the Moonlight Rollaway roller rink in Pasadena, CA and they were married in 1956 at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Azusa, CA. They moved to Baldwin Park, CA where all five of their children were born. They later moved to Santa Barbara, CA in 1965 and purchased a home on the Mesa, where they lived the rest of their lives. Wayne worked in construction in the Santa Barbara area for over 40 years as a lather/plasterer and drywall hanger. He worked on many local buildings, churches and houses during that time. He was also a long time member at the Santa Barbara Elks Lodge. Wayne was a devoted husband and father. He and his wife, Joanne, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2006 at their favorite restaurant, the Sizzler, in Goleta. They loved square dancing and traveling together. But, most of all, they loved being with family. Wayne was very active in his children's and grandchildren's lives. He was extremely supportive and loving. Wayne was known for his cheesy sense of humor and was always ready with a corny joke or funny story. He also loved Broadway music and would often break out in song spontaneously. Wayne was a long time member at Trinity Baptist Church (now Santa Barbara Community Church) and was involved in the construction of the Sunday School and office buildings. A private graveside service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 9th at Santa Barbara Cemetery. A memorial service and celebration of Wayne's life will be held the following day at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 10th at Santa Barbara Community Church, 1002 Cieneguitas Road. All are welcome. Donations in his memory would be greatly appreciated to Santa Barbara Visiting Nurses / Hospice.
