We often take for granted the very people who made/make our world a brighter and more meaningful place to learn and grow. Lanny Coulston offered those lucky enough to be close to him a humble wisdom and humanistic awareness. I remember Lanny best when he ended his illustrious career with SLCUSD because when most of us stop teaching...we stop teaching--not Lanny. I forget where we were, but he soon handed me a novel he said I needed to read (he was right), and shared his plight with his oncoming illness. To commiserate, I shared my problematic situation with my growing number of struggling high school students who were in my reading class because they were non-readers, failing their other classes, and seriously at-risk. Without a moment's hesitation, Lanny offered to come in and help me--no pay--no recognition--and no other help. His love for reading, his insightful nature, his sensitivity toward struggling youngsters, all dove-tailed into a remarkable experience for our students--soon, the environment changed and with more help from Cuesta and Cal Poly tutors, our youngsters began passing their classes and reading on their own. And when an administrative decision was made to adopt a scripted reading program, Lanny wrote defending the reading program we were offering and tried to save the program. It was not to be...so,I refused to teach scripted reading to students--a flawed program that insults students--and returned to teaching all English--Lanny left...and soon my teaching load consumed my life. I regret not maintaining a friendship with a man who provided me and many others so much life knowledge. How many of us lose valuable friendships due to our all-consuming jobs?
Fortunately, his daughter Katie enrolled in my AP English class, and I was reminded of the essence of Lanny and Janna--both teachers--both educators (like my wife and I), and through Katie's brilliant presence, I was able to visit with my friend once again. Thanks Janna for sharing your husband with all of us--God bless and Godspeed to Mr. Lanny Coulston--by the way, I kept the novel he gave me for 20 years, but last year, I found someone else who needed to read it--I can just see Lanny's all-knowing smile as I passed on his knowledge to someone else.

Mr. Coulston was my 3rd grade teacher...I still remember him...I remember that he read "Where the red fern grows" and several other books - he helped to instill a love of reading, learning, and a passion for caring for others. Blessings to his family. <3

I had Mr Coulston in 6th grade at Morro Elementary. He was a great teacher and we just loved him. My mom worked at The Galley and he would go there all the time. She would tell me came in, and always commented what a nice man he was. Well one day she came in and mentioned it was his birthday the upcoming weekend. My girlfriends Marjorie and Sherry and I decided we would bake him a birthday cake and take it to him. ( I had also learned where he lived via mom) I think it was his 32nd birthday, so we go marching down with this cake and all those candles and go ringing the bell at his gate . We sure suprised him alright! I believe we asked him to light the candles which he joked that we didnt really have to put ALL those candles on the cake, one would suffice, he didn't want the fire dept showing up..we insitsted on all 32. He lit them and we sang Happy Birthday. He offered us a piece of cake (which now looked like a machine gun just shot it up) which we of course said YES. He thanked us and we left. I'm not sure what suprised him more, how we knew it was his birthday, how we knew his age, or how did we know where he lived? Mr Coulston was one of those great teachers who had a great impact on his students and got them excited to learn. It's been over 40 years since I was his student and I can close my eyes and still see that great smile that you know is genuine, because his eyes would smile too! (and you just can't fake smiling eyes!)
My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I hope it comforts you to know he lives on in the memories and hearts of so many of his "kids".
RIP Mr Coulston!
