Obituary of Adeline Frances Klein-Freeman

Adeline Frances Klein Freeman passed away on November 6, 2014 in Goleta, California at the age of 96. A funeral service was held at St. Raphael's Church in Goleta on November 11. Adeline was born in Hartington, Nebraska on February 27, 1918, the fifth of ten children. She was taught by the Ursuline nuns and spent her childhood on the farm, coming of age during the Great Depression. As a young adult, she followed her sister, Irene, to Southern California, where at a dance at the Palladium in Hollywood, she met George Albert Klein (Al), an Air Force pilot. They married in 1945. One of Al's best friends at the time, Richard Freeman, would become Adeline's husband fifty-five years later, after the passing of Al. Adeline was a devout Catholic who supported her children's Catholic education. She was proud of her role as a religious education teacher in Atwater for more than twenty years. Her community service also included volunteering at Castle AFB Hospital, and welcoming new airmen to Castle. Adeline had a gift for hospitality and often demonstrated her fabulous cooking. She won awards for her flowers and arrangements. Summers were filled making jams and preserving produce from the orchard. Other interests included needlework, painting, reading about politics, and rooting for the 49ers! A trip to Germany and the birthplace of her father was a dream come true. Later she would travel to the Holy Land and enjoy a month-long cruise, a gift from her new husband, Richard. Adeline was close to her six grandchildren: David Murphey, Andrew Murphey, Robert Klein (Erin), Julie (Klein) Leaser (Mike), Aislinn Klein and Gavin Klein. The feeling was mutual, as they remember: "Grandma Adeline you were as…special as the orchid Grandpa named after you…I remember your cherry pies…listening to stories…you were kind and compassionate, loving and generous...your elegance and values…your love was truly a gift." Besides her children, Carol Murphey (Thomas), Jim Klein (Connie) and Ken Klein (Nano), Adeline is survived by two sisters, her husband, Richard Freeman, and his children, Terry Freeman and Boni Grainger (Nigel) and a large extended family. Adeline was laid to rest with George Albert at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery. Donations may be made to your favorite charity. Arrangements entrusted to McDermott-Crockett Mortuary
