Obituary of Lucille Ann Dauphine

Lucille "Lu" Dauphine passed away on Wednesday, March 5th at Mission View Health Center in San Luis Obispo encircled by coworkers & friends -all of whom were like her family. Most importantly she was surrounded by the residents she lived to care for. Lu was born in San Francisco on November 2, 1937. She was the third of four children born to an Italian mom called Lucia and a Dutch father named Jan Hendrik. Coming from a strict religious upbringing, she naturally had a bit of a wild streak in her youth, getting pregnant at the age of 18 and giving birth to a devoted son, Michael. Shortly after his birth, she met the man she would marry, USAF Sergeant Edward Dauphine, a real ladies man who she would have three children with, and travel the world, before discovering his infidelity and proudly selling all of their household belongings while he was at work (welcome home, darling!) Thus cleansed of his philandering ways, she packed up her children and began a gypsy-like adventure across three states. In 1981, she found her calling in life as a Certified Nursing Assistant. As hard as life was raising children as a single mom, her work taking care of others became the brightest part of her life. In 1998, she moved to the Central Coast and begin her tenure with Compass Health; first working with her beloved crew at Bayside Care Center, followed by years of laughter and love at San Luis Transitional Care and lastly at Mission View Health Center. She received countless recognition awards, cards, letters and the trust of those who mattered the most to her: her residents, their loved ones and the people she worked with. Each day that she was afforded the opportunity to wear her name badge and don her colorful scrubs was a day that gave her purpose in life. While her life was cut unexpectedly short, her final days were spent surrounded by the people she loved the most at Mission View Health Center and Compass Health; new cherished friends at Wilshire Hospice, residents, their loved ones, staff, family, all filtering in her room one after the other, to hold her hand, give her hugs, share a smile and acknowledge her, just as she had always done for all of them-a perfect culmination of a life serving others. Lu is survived by her beloved Chinese Crested, Billy, 2 daughters, Susan & Nicole; granddaughter Stacey, son Edward, Jr., wonderful friends, and her spirit of giving, which will live on in every life that she touched. She is preceded in death by son Michael. A gathering to acknowledge and remember our beloved "Mama Lu" will be held at Mission View Health Center on Thursday, March 13th at 10am. In lieu of flowers, Lu requested that donations be made to the Compass Education Foundation to further promote the education and advancement of CNA's just like her.
