Obituary of Christina Hermana Pollmann

Christina Hermana Pollmann of Goleta, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 31, 2013 with her daughter by her side. She suffered complications after falling at home on August 15th and undergoing hip surgery. Christina was 100 years old. She was born in Brummen, The Netherlands, on March 25, 1913 to Jacobus Jansen and Theresia Borgers. She had four brothers. In 1938 she met Adolph Pollmann, a school teacher in Groenlo, and they were married in 1939, started their family, and in December 1954 they immigrated to the United States and settled in Santa Barbara where Adolph began a house painting business and Christina worked part-time as a caregiver. They returned to Holland in 1964 so Adolph could resume his teaching career for another five years. In 1971 they returned to Santa Barbara to be near their children. After her husband's death in 1984, Christina learned to live on her own. She had many friends and acquaintances and stayed in close contact with her children and her many relatives in Holland. She was a loving mother and a meticulous housekeeper, baked her own bread, knitted many afghans and slippers for her friends and family, and was an avid jigsaw puzzler. As she got older she constantly strived to make new friends to replace the ones she lost to old age. She suffered a severe stroke in 2008 but made a remarkable recovery. She had a wonderful 100th birthday celebration with family and friends at Andersen's Restaurant in March, and in July she attended the wedding of her grandson Eric. Christina is survived by her son Reinard Pollmann of Orinda, CA, daughter Christine Horn and her husband Martin of Goleta, grandson Roger Horn and wife Linda of Mission Viejo, grandson Eric Horn and wife Jodie of San Diego, and great grandson Riley, who'll greatly miss his Grammy. She leaves behind in Holland her only surviving sister-in-law, Gerda Jansen, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her four brothers, Leo, Jan, Henk and Louis. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Senior Advocates Residential Care and Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care for the wonderful care Christina received the last few weeks of her life. A funeral service will be held for Christina on Friday, November 8th, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the McDermott-Crockett Mortuary Chapel, 2020 Chapala Street, Santa Barbara. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care.
