Obituary of Anne Pidgeon

Anne Pidgeon was born on June 12, 1918, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She graduated from the University of Michigan where she studied her life- long interest in the English language. She met her future husband, Larry Pidgeon, at the University, though their friendship was delayed by World War II, during which Anne served in the Navy as an instructor of aerial navigation and Larry as a captain in the Army Infantry. After the war they reunited at the Army Hospital in Corpus Christie, Texas, where they married. Anne taught in the English Department at UCSB for many years: English 101, English Literature, and African Women's Literature, a course which she developed. Larry was hired by the Santa Barbara News Press, and ultimately became Editor of the Editorial Page. They built a small redwood home in Mission Canyon on a GI loan, where first appeared daughter, Charlene, then son, Bruce, for whom they provided enchanted childhoods, full of explorations of natural wonders in the rural countryside. Anne was bright and articulate, a liberal thinker, and a staunch advocate of education. She was an enthusiastic traveler, talented gardener, good friend, and devoted wife and mother. Anne is survived by her son, Bruce Pidgeon and daughter, Charlene Pidgeon. A celebration of Anne's life will be held later this year.
