Obituary of Beverly Yellen

Beverly Yellen passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 due to complications from a bad fall. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 1, 1920. Upon graduation from high school in 1938, she was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Chicago, which was a very rare occurrence for a woman at that time. After college, she met and married her first husband, Gilbert Blumenthal. Together they owned and operated a juvenile department store, Small Fry Furniture, in Gary, Indiana. After her first husband's death, she ran the store herself proving to be quite an adroit business woman. Several years later, she met and married Arthur Yellen, sold her business and moved back to Chicago. After Arthur's retirement in 1976, they moved to Santa Barbara. Beverly was actively involved in numerous community organizations and was an avid mahjong player. She taught mahjong and there was always a waiting list to be in her next class. She is survived by her children, daughter, Dale Tetalman of Santa Barbara, son, Mark Blumenthal (Brenda) of Tulsa, Oklahoma and son, Bruce Blumenthal (Cindy) of Oceanside, California. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive her. Graveside services will take place at Santa Barbara Cemetery on Wednesday April 17, 2013 at 1:00 PM. Donations in her memory may be made to Santa Barbara Hadassah, Congregation B'nai B'rith or The Santa Barbara Music Club.
