Obituary of Marion Abrams

Sweet, nice, courageous, unflappable, genuine, bright, gentle, kind, modest, decent, beautiful Marion Abrams was born in Los Angeles on Jan 17, 1930 and passed away-August 10, 2012, 5 days before her 59th wedding anniversary. Marion lived in Goleta for the last 47 years. She was a master teacher who earned a lifetime credential and was an exemplar for aspiring educators after her first year in the classroom. Marion was a woman for all seasons but summer brought her the most joy. The Music Academy of the West was an irresistible lure as she attended all the vocal master-classes and marveled at the beauty of the operatic voices and skill of the accompanists. Marion had a very special relationship with her sister and brother-law Beverly and David Altman of Menlo Park. The couples shared family vacations that included 12 camping trips to the Lair of the Bear, many journeys to Mexico, a visit to Western Europe, over 45 years of traditional Thanksgiving in Goleta and Passover in Menlo Park. Sibling rivalry existed only on the tennis courts during familial mixed doubles or in the context of word games; Sunday crossword puzzles, in ink, racing to see who would finish first. Boggle 'til the wee hours. There were many discussions on proper usage of words that must have seemed endless to the kids. Marion maintained a life-long connection with 5 other Dorsey Hi graduates who were among the founders of Leimert Park B'nai B'rith Girls. Every 2 months they gathered for lunch and talk. They supported her even when the ravages of Lewy Body Disorder had robbed her of that bright and shining mind. Marion is survived by her devoted husband Marshall, sons Bill (Gayle), Steve (Penni), Dan (Laura) and all their children/grandchildren. She had a special connection with the many nieces and nephews whom she loved and an even more remarkable bond with her sister Beverly, (Dave). Marion and Marshall had been members of Congregation B'nai B'rith for 47 years. The incredibly gifted clergy of CBB, Rabbi Stephen Cohen and Cantor Mark Childs conducted services in the synagogue, cemetery and home. The family is grateful for the beauty, inspiration and enduring comfort of their words. Donations in Marion's memory may be made to Congregation B'nai B'rith, 1000 San Antonio Creek Rd, Santa Barbara, CA 93111
